Blas Trujillo, Minister of Health of the Canary Islands Government, explained that the Executive of the community will request the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands the prohibition of mobility and movement of people in the islands that are at level 2 of risk by Covid19. This measure would affect La Palma and La Gomera, where, if it comes into force, it would apply between 02:00 and 06:00.

In the case of the islands that are in level 3, as is the case of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, it would be valid between 01:00 and 06:00. The aim is to cover two specific days, New Year’s Eve and Three Kings Night, from 31 December to 1 January and from 5 to 6 January.

The reasons that have led the Canary Islands Government to adopt this restriction are the constant increase in Covid-19 infections. However, it will not be applicable if the Executive does not obtain the judicial endorsement, so the request has already been forwarded to the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. Despite this, Blas Trujillo has stated that there will be a number of exceptions in the application.

These are mainly two. On the one hand, it is allowed to break the curfew to go to the health center or to the workplace. It will enter into force once it is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, after it has been approved by the courts. The counselor has justified this request in the “high community transmission” of coronavirus.

They explain from the Government that these two nights are the most “mass movements” occur in the population, so it is a measure that seeks to avoid all this. The enforcement of this Covid-19 restriction will be the law enforcement agencies, which will impose control over the population.
