Spain has so far recorded 49 cases of the omicron variant of the coronavirus Of the total infections, more than half are not linked to travel, according to the latest report on the epidemiological situation published on Monday by the Ministry of Health. Concern is growing over the spread of this new mutation, especially in the UK.
The Minister of Health and Families of the Government of Andalusia has confirmed the fourth case of the omicron strain located in Seville in a young woman from Madrid. The remaining infections are located in Cádiz (2) and Almería (1).
The laboratory of the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) has registered 4 omicron infections. Two of them would correspond to an outbreak imported from another country. All cases have mild symptoms, such as a headache or sore throat.
In the Balearic Islands there are 8 people infected with the African strain. Of the contagions, 3 would have been detected in patients from South Africa.
In the Canary Islands, the omicron variant has also been found: a National Police and a nurse from the Candelaria Hospital in Tenerife. In addition, there are six other suspicious cases being sequenced.
The health authorities of Cantabria have confirmed this Monday the first 2 cases of the omicron variant. Both are vaccinated and have mild symptoms so they have not needed hospital care.
The Government of Castilla-La Mancha has also confirmed a case of infection with the omicron variant in the province of Guadalajara.
The number of cases of omicron is 9 in Catalonia: 7 detected in travellers from South Africa and 2 in close contacts.
Omicron already affects 6 people in the health areas of Mérida, Badajoz, Cáceres and Don Benito-Villanueva de la Serena, in Extremadura.
The Ministry of Health of Galicia has reported today that the cases of the omicron variant rise to 9. Of these, 6 have been located in the sanitary area of A Coruña, to which are added another 3 already known in the area of Vigo. None of these people are hospitalized.
So far, the Community of Madrid has reported 4 positive African strain. The last patient, a 23-year-old girl, was infected by community transmission.
According to the latest Health report, despite the incidence of omniculture, the Delta variant remains the dominant variant in all communities. The remaining mutations do not reach 1% of the total infections in the country.
