Spain so far has one case for the new omicron variant. This is a 51-year-old man from Madrid who had recently travelled to South Africa and had been vaccinated.
In addition, there are four other positives under study that are suspected of belonging to the omicron variant: two in Catalonia, one in Castile and Leon and a third in Madrid. The latter also belonged to a person, in this case a woman, who had recently travelled to South Africa and had also received the vaccines.
The results of all these tests will be confirmed within the next few hours. The health authorities point out that, in any case, all of these people, who are quarantined, have mild symptoms.
The four people (the two from Madrid and Catalonia) who came from South Africa tested positive for PCR on arrival at Spanish airports.
The Council of Ministers approved the implementation of exceptional measures to curb the spread of the new omni variant of Covid-19 with the limitation of flights between South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe and Spanish airports.
The measure will enter into force at 00:00 on 2 December and will remain in force until 24:00 on 15 December 2021, period which may be extended if necessary in the light of developments in the situation of the pandemic and the decisions which may be taken in a coordinated manner within the European Union.
A week from the puente of the Constitution and less than a month from the Christmas holidays, the transmission of this variant is worrying, which coincides in Spain with a progressive increase in the contagion of coronavirus (22.911 more this weekend) and an increasing hospital pressure.
According to the latest health data, the 14-day cumulative incidence reached 199 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday (67 points more than last Monday and 28 points more than Friday).
ICU beds occupied by Covid patients now account for 7.3%, 1.6 points more than a week ago and almost one point more than last Friday. In addition, transmission increases in all the communities and Navarre, with an incidence of 571, is the first territory to reach the extreme risk, more than 500 cases according to the new traffic light approved by Sanidad.
