Concern at growth of Covid cases

SENIOR members of the Valencia government will meet with health chiefs later today to assess the upturn in coronavirus cases in the region – and discuss the possibility of new health restrictions.

President Ximo Puig announced yesterday the authority would consider adopting new measures in a bid to control the spike.

He admitted “we are observing the rise in cases with great concern” and government figures would meet with the health sector to discuss “what measures must be taken”.

The delta variant now accounts for 50% of new cases in Valencia and the government is looking at steps to halt the spread of the highly contagious variant.

“We have always said that we will make decisions according to the evolution of the pandemic,” said Puig – adding that people needed to be responsible. “We will not overcome this pandemic without everyone’s effort.”

And he said with restrictions easing and increased mobility allowed, it was known infections were likely to rise. “Now prudence is more necessary than ever”.
