Balearic Islands get green light

BRITISH travellers looking for a holiday in the sun are flooding back to the Balearic Islands after the destination was added to the UK government’s ‘green travel list’.

The return of holidaymakers has boosted hopes for the recovery of the local economy after the crisis triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lifting restrictions means British travellers do not have to quarantine for 10 days on their return. Spain requires a negative Covid-19 test or proof of vaccination – new restrictions after a month of opening its doors to UK visitors, travellers from the Eu must also show a negative test.

Around 4 million British tourists enjoyed the hospitality of the Balearics in 2019 and hotels on the islands reported bookings soared in the 24 hours after Britain announced it was a green list destination, unlike mainland Spain.

Spain’s airport operator Aena said flight reservations to the islands over the next 12 months have returned to 80% of normal levels, compared to 46% for the country as a whole.
