One in three residents have had one shot

VALENCIA president Ximo Puig says June is the “key month” in the region’s vaccination campaign as the programme continues “at a good pace”.

He said people aged 40 to 50 would start to receive shots from June 17, while overt eh first two weeks of the month everyone aged over 50 will have had one jab or be fully immunised.

Outlining progress in the fight against Covid-19, the politician said more than two million vaccines had been administered – 16% of the population had completed the regime and one in three residents had received one shot.

Over the last four months, residents of nursing homes and everyone over 80 had been vaccinated; 93% of people aged 70 to 79 had received one dose and half were fully vaccinated. People aged over 60 would be all immunised by the end of May.

Puig said it meant those most at risk of coronavirus were protected. “Protecting the most vulnerable, and those who have cared for us all our lives, is what makes a decent society like ours.”

Currently, the rate of infection in Valencia is 35 per 100,000 people – the lowest in Spain and a reference point for Europe. Then president said it was “thanks to the efforts of the whole of society” and leading to “a summer full of hope”.
