Pedro Sánchez has acknowledged that the country’s COVID-19 outbreak not only directly killed thousands but also likely increased the rate among those who were suffering from other ailments who failed to get necessary treatment.

Spain’s health ministry recognises over 27,000 confirmed deaths from coronavirus.

But the Carlos III Institute has registered more than 43,000 above the expected rate since March.

Also, Spain’s National Institute of Statistics says that 48,000 more people have died in Spain in 2020 than during the same period in last year.

67 deaths from the virus have been reported over the past seven days.

Fewer people tested positive for COVID-19, with 164 new infections, down from 177 the previous day, taking the national tally yesterday to 241,310.

More than half of the new cases, or 86 out of the 164, were reported from areas in and around Madrid while 12 of Spain’s 17 Autonomous Communities registered fewer than 10 cases each.
