Today the electricity rises by 7.5% and reaches 287 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), the highest price in two months. This upward trend also coincides with the arrival of cold weather, which has also significantly increased the cost of gas.

In just one month it has tripled in price. On the 6th of November the gas price is at 43 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), today it’s valued at 120 euros, according to data from the Iberian Gas Market (Mibgas).

Faced with the escalating prices many communities of neighbours with central heating have decided to reduce the hours that they have it on. It is the case of Carmen who has gas central heating and her community has been one of the many that has restricted the schedule. ” We have installed electric radiators with which increases the consumption of electricity, which is also very expensive,” she explains.

Users who have individual heating have opted directly not to turn it on because “electricity and gas debts accumulate” that they cannot pay. This problem is experienced in Spain by 7 million people who have trouble heating their homes.

During this week a storm will hit the whole country and leave rainfall in many areas. However, many heaters will remain off. ” People with a normal average job cannot afford to turn it on,” users acknowledge.

The energy crisis and inflation have had a significant impact on households, especially since the autumn. This is why many families have been reducing their spending for fear of bills that have become virtually unaffordable. ” You can’t afford these prices, you have to choose between eating or heating your home”.

To cope with the cold many find the solution with blankets, sweaters, robes and all kinds of warm clothes. “We use the blankets all day and wear an extra layer of clothing”
