A group of environmentalists have thrown tomato soup on the famous painting ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’,painted by the artist Johannes Vermeer, at the Museum in Hague.
The famous painting, by artist Johannes Vermeer, has been attacked by climate activists at the Mauritshuis Museum, in The Hague. This work thus adds to the list of paintings of ‘Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh or the painting of Monet as paintings attacked with tomato soup in recent weeks.
The Dutch police have arrested at least 3 people for these events and confirmed that the attackers in the framework are related to the climate movement. Two of them wore ‘Just Stop Oil’ T-shirts, the same organization that poured tomato soup onto ‘The Sunflowers’ at the National Gallery in London. Those involved are accused of an “open attack on artistic property”.
In the images shared by social networks, you can see how an individual seems to paint with a marker on the image. Then another person comes up from behind and throws his partner a can of tomato soup. While the other keeps his head glued to the painting, another screams his plea.
“How do you feel to see something so beautiful and valuable being seemingly shattered before your eyes? We are outraged. This image is protected like a diamond. Well, vulnerable people all over the planet are not protected. The future of our children is not protected. People in extreme poverty have to choose between heating and eating, and they are not protected,” he says.
‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’, also known as ‘The Turban Girl’ or the Dutch ‘Mona Lisa’ is the latest work of art attacked by climate activists. Just a week and a half ago, Van Gogh’s painting ‘Sunflowers’ was vandalized with tomato soup at the National Gallery in London.
Just a few days ago, other activists threw mashed potatoes at a painting by the French impressionist painter Claude Monet at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam in Berlin (Germany). On 9 October two people glued their hands to Pablo Picasso’s painting, exhibited in Melbourne (Australia) and last May a visitor threw a cake against ‘La Gioconda’ in the Louvre Museum.
In Spain, authorities has asked the Spanish museums to “take extreme precautions” referring to “the prohibition of introducing elements and beverages into the museums”, as well as backpacks and large packages, umbrella or sharp objects.
