These are the new rules and fines of the DGT that come into force today

From this Monday, March 21, the new measures of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) of the reform of the Traffic Law enter into force. Among the star measures we say goodbye to the extra margin of 20 km/h when overtaking on conventional roads and welcome fines with six points less for using the phone.

The DGT seeks to help reduce accidents by 50% throughout this decade. It is the most ambitious objective of Pere Navarro, Director of Traffic. It justifies the elimination of the 20 km/h margin in overtaking by ensuring that speed is one of the main causes of traffic accidents.

According to Navarro, the law is also focused on environmental protection, with explicit references to “episodes of high pollution and low emission areas. The DGT launches the new campaign under the slogan “New times, new rules”. Below we explain the new rules that come into force this Monday.

The new DGT rules

• The maximum speed allowed for overtaking on conventional roads shall not be exceeded by 20 km/h.
• Four points of the driver’s license will be lost for not wearing seat belts, child restraint systems and other protective features.
• Six points will be lost for driving while holding the phone, even if it is not being used.
• When overtaking a bicycle or moped, if there are two lanes, the other lane must be occupied. If there is only one lane, the security distance of 1.5 meters must be maintained. The fine for infringement will be maintained at 200 euros.
• It shall not be permitted to stop or park on a cycle path.
• Fines of 200 euros for not respecting the traffic restrictions that respond to the active protocols for pollution episodes and Low Emission Zones (ZBE).
• It shall be prohibited to carry radar inhibitors or cinemeters in vehicles, whether they are connected or not. The infringement shall entail a three-point loss fine.

New rules for mopeds

For drivers, if they have a motorcycle or moped, approved wireless devices may be used in the helmet for navigation purposes.

New rules for scooters

New rules are also coming in for drivers of special mobility vehicles, such as electric scooters. For minors, the alcohol rate when driving should be 0 for both mopeds, AM permit, motorcycles up to 125 cc, bicycles and special mobility vehicles.

The use of motorways and motorways is prohibited, skateboards may not be used in pedestrian areas and a helmet must be worn.
