Several countries, including Spain, are already administering a booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to their population. According to the latest report of the Ministry of Health, the Autonomous Communities have administered 85,480,089 doses of the vaccine, which represents 95.8% of the population with a complete regimen.

The data indicate that there are close to 12 million people vaccinated with the booster dose. The data include, in addition to high-risk vaccinated people and people living in nursing homes, those immunized with Janssen monodose and those over the age of 60.

The head of Biological Health Threats and Vaccines Strategy of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Marco Cavalieri, expressed in a press conference his doubts about the need to administer a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine “continuously” fear of “oversaturating the immune system”.

The EMA says they are “concerned” with a vaccination strategy that involves vaccinating every three or four months, with the exception of immunosuppressed people.

“We must be careful not to overwhelm the immune system with repeated vaccinations,” he warned. Although he understands that a third dose has been administered “because of the current epidemiological situation”. ” It would be better to start thinking about more spaced booster doses in the time they are synchronised with winter, as is done with flu, “he proposed.

The representative of the EMA, Cavalieri, rules out that for the moment the coronavirus can be treated as a flu. ” It’s moving towards an epidemic”.

About the omic variant, remember that it is a “very contagious” variant of Sars-CoV-2 and that it is important to “be aware of its potential load and not to rule it out as a mild disease”.

He has reassured that the current vaccines “provide high protection against serious illness and omicron-related hospitalizations”.
