Expats are 2.5 times more likely to experience mental health problems than domestic counterparts, studies have revealed.

An American study has been the first to establish that expats face higher levels of stress living in foreign countries than those at home.

Behavioural researchers at non-profit Chestnut Health Systems found issues of internalising and externalising problems – as well as substance use disorders – featured strongly in the expat experience.

“As the number of expatriates is expected to increase, our findings underscore the need to design programs and provide services that mitigate the challenges of living and working abroad,” said study co-author Dave Sharar, Ph.D., Managing Director of Chestnut Global Partners.

Battling with bureaucracy

Closer to home in Spain, one behavioural researcher found that sun-baked social media pictures didn’t paint a full picture of life abroad.

Barcelona-based therapist James Cormack carried out a survey amongst local British expats to discover what issues affect mental health.

“The dream of a chilled out expat lifestyle, less stressful than life back home, is in question,” he told Medium.com.

Participants in Cormack’s survey named ‘local bureaucracy’ as the biggest driver of anxiety in Spain.

Homesickness, financial issues, and cultural and language issues, featured next on the list.

According to Cormack’s study, expats needed to find coping mechanisms to offset the stress of living Spain.

He found the most popular ways of coping are: meeting people and socialising (54%), spending time in nature (47%) and taking part in sports (44%).

A natural remedy

For some people, one of the most effective methods has been to take CBD oil. Claudia Appleford who is based in Surrey takes CBD oil to manage her anxiety and insomnia.

She uses Pure Organic CBD, which she said has been ‘far more effective’ than the other ones she has tried.

CBD and Anxiety – Meet Claudia. Claudia suffers from anxiety and insomnia. As is the case with many people her age, all kinds of factors are contributing to a sense of pressure. Pressure to be successful, pressure to look amazing all the time, pressure to be seen and heard, the pressure to be significant; the list goes on and on. What is ironic is that social media could be used as a huge platform for understanding, acceptance, sharing and love. A place where encouragement and motivation inspire youth to get off the phone and do something that makes YOU happy. Be yourself. Be kind. Share your experience. CBD has caused us to cross paths with some amazing people, and Claudia is one of them. Learn here how CBD has helped her overcome barriers in her life and start developing into the person she is. There is a wealth of information out there about the benefits of CBD oil to those who suffer from insomnia.

But for those suffering from mental health issues, particularly the young generation, CBD oil is a relatively new phenomenon.

For some, it is the natural alternative to prescription medication, which they have had to rely on for years.

Robby Thompson, Communications Coordinator at Pure Organic CBD, told BayRadio: “It is incredible how many younger people are suffering from anxiety.

“Social media has driven young adults to be so unsure about every choice they make. It makes me anxious!”

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it is important for expats to take care of themselves and their mental health.

Share your problems: talking about your issues to friends and family is proven to receive stress and anxiety.

Pure Organic CBD offers anonymous advice and has medical professionals on standby for anyone that is looking for help.
